Geelong history

Trawling round the internet, as you do, I came across  the Bellarine Peninsula and Geelong and District History website. It contains a wealth of information, including indexes to midwives, Hackney drivers, and photographers.

I immediately dug out my album of old photographs from the Geelong area to see if the information about the photographers would tell me more about my people.

There is also a very useful search engine covering all the databases available on this site, which includes indexes to  books, directories, church records etc.
Another regional Victorian site worth a look is the Ballarat & District Genealogical Society I find the website very busy, but it is worth persevering because there are some real gem within. Using the website search engine is an effective way forward.

More on photographs

Picture Australia is a photographic database, which includes around 1.8 million photographs from galleries, archives, museums and libraries across Australia.

You can contribute your images to Picture Australia's Flickr groups and help enrich Picture Australia’s collection!

There are a couple of other photo databases that are fascinating for anyone into old photographs, local or social history: Museum Australia's Biggest Family Album and the Victorian Primary Industries Dept. Virtual Exhibition

Historic photographs

Most local historical societies and public libraries include photographs of people, places, and activities in their local area, and there are some wonderful photographs in the collections around the Latrobe Valley and Gippsland. It is worth visiting societies to look.

Many societies and libraries include photographs on their webpages. The Traralgon Historical Society enables you to search their resources and view thumbnails or small photographs; simply add the word 'photograph' to your search term to generate a list of photographs with thumbnails attached. If you are visiting Traralgon have a look at the scenic photos around the walls, Magnificient !
