Tips in using databases

Mailing lists can be a fantastic source of information about local and family history as they enable people interested in the same places or the same families to come together to share information through email. I am a member of several mailing lists including Aus-Vic-Gippsland and Aus-Vic-Geelong.
I mention this because Susie Z. on the Geelong mailing list has just provided a great tip for people using the Victorian Passenger indexes if you are looking for families travelling together.
Susie discovered that if you use OR between First names, you can search for all members of a family at once provided you also sort by Year and Ship's name.
Her full email is well worth a look through the Geelong archive, as it demonstates this technique in much more detail, and it highlights the use of a * wildcard to cover different ways of spelling names.
